Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emre Çelik Explores Teaching Turkish as Cultural Diplomacy at TLT Talks
The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emre Çelik from Pamukkale University on October 13, 2026, for the ninth session of the 2026–2027 Academic Year Turkology Talks (TLT Talks). In his talk, “Teaching Turkish in the Context of Cultural Diplomacy,” Dr. Çelik explored the role of language teaching in building cultural connections across borders.
Dr. Çelik emphasized that language is more than a tool for communication: it also conveys a nation’s culture, values and worldview. He described teaching Turkish as a foreign language as an important component of Türkiye’s “soft power” and cultural diplomacy, noting that learners can become voluntary cultural ambassadors.
He explained that learning Turkish goes beyond understanding grammar rules, offering opportunities to develop lasting connections with Turkish culture, literature and history. In this context, he highlighted the responsibilities of Turkish language instructors working both in Türkiye and abroad, particularly in the Balkans, whose work can also play a diplomatic role.
A central focus of the talk was how classroom practices and teaching materials can support cultural diplomacy. Through practical examples, Dr. Çelik illustrated how educational resources and academic projects can help students engage with culture alongside language learning.
Concluding his presentation, Dr. Çelik highlighted the growing significance of teaching Turkish in international relations, academic cooperation and cultural exchange. He encouraged students and prospective teachers of Turkish to consider these broader dimensions as they develop their professional skills. The session concluded with questions and discussion.
